PERFORMANCE TRACK

Acting

Acting classes provide an in-depth study of acting techniques including Alexander, Stanislavski, and Shakespeare.  Students will learn the stage basics inherent in these techniques.  They will learn a working theatre vocabulary and will gain skills in analysis, acting, creativity, self-expression, and improvisation. 

Rehearsal & Performance

Each semester students participate in rehearsal and performance to develop their acting techniques and theatre skills in a theatre company setting.  Students will demonstrate an ability to apply the fundamentals and techniques of their craft to main stage productions and performances.  Regular performances in a variety of settings is part of this study.  Learning to participate and collaborate in a group is vitally important in this class.

Diction

Designed to help students improve and practice the basic techniques of developing a clear and expressive speaking voice.  Breath control, phonation, placement, projection, and articulation will be the focus to improve pitch and overall vocal quality.

Ballet

Ballet classes are designed to explore the foundational elements and techniques of ballet and progress to advanced levels of classical ballet training.

Tap

Tap classes begin with an introduction to the basic tap dance techniques and progress to advanced tap.

Modern Dance

Modern Dance begins with foundational studies of human movement as an art form with focus on developing strength, flexibility, and coordination.  A variety of modern and contemporary dance forms are explored.

Jazz/Hip Hop

Jazz/hip hop classes begin with an introduction to American Jazz dance styles and techniques and advances to a variety of Jazz styles including contemporary, lyric, classical, and hip hop.

Applied Lesson

All students enrolled in musical theatre take a weekly private, one-on-one lesson with an instructor.  Lessons range from 30-60 minutes weekly and are designed to focus on developing proper technique in the student along with advanced training in musicianship and preparation for performances, productions, and on-stage experiences.  Repertoire in a variety of styles will be explored initially with an emphasis on Broadway and musical theatre styles.

Musical Theatre Workshop

An additional class to work in connection with the Rehearsal & Performance course in which students learn to work together, critique one another, practice auditioning, develop on-stage skills, and develop leadership roles in back-stage technical work.  Performances are part of this class.

Auditioning

Designed to help students learn how to select and prepare material for auditions.  Students will prepare for college and professional auditions.  They will also create a personal mission statement and five-year plan to use as a guide toward planning a career.

Voice & Movement

A class designed to explore the student’s range of vocal and physical techniques for creative expression in performance.  Through exercises, training, and performances, students will have the opportunity to reduce habitual tensions, connect their movement and voice to imagery and text, and increase the strength, flexibility and dynamic of their bodies in performance.  Students will gain skills to improve their physical awareness, body alignment, and movement and vocal range. 

Script Analysis

Designed to explore important tools and strategies for reading and analyzing scripts and dramatic literature.  Through a variety of classical and contemporary readings, students will develop new critical thinking skills to further their growth as artists.

Stage Combat

An introductory course to stage fighting techniques as well as safety methods.  Students will explore both armed and unarmed combat to start developing fight choreography.

Stage Makeup

An introductory course to practical makeup design principles and application techniques.  Students will explore facial structure, aging, shadow, highlight, paint modeling, latex usage, wounds, and other basic techniques of theatrical makeup.

Devised Theatre

The course is a culmination of acting classes in which students will collaborate to create an original work using a full range of acting and improvisation techniques to present as a public performance. 

College Preparation

Designed to help students put a career in the arts into perspective.  Students will reflect on their high school arts studies, create a personal mission statement, research colleges with theatre programs, research professional theatre opportunities, and develop a five-year plan with future goals.

Musical Theatre Literature

Designed to teach students the history of the elements and styles of musical theatre. A study of composers, lyricists, producers, directors, choreographers, performers, and conductors will be reviewed in context with the social-historical events and philosophies of the time.

Musical Theatre Choreography

Designed to focus on elements of dancing, singing, and acting in relation to the on stage performance.  Students will utilize skills learned in previous dance classes and rehearsal sessions.

Directing

Designed to give students a new perspective and analytical mindset of the production process.  Students will work through the directing process and the collaborative nature of this craft as they prepare to direct their peers in a showcase.

Senior Showcase

Each senior will perform in recital style to showcase the work they have accomplished.  Students will work with a music director, choreographer, and acting instructor to prepare this performance.

TECHNICAL THEATRE TRACK

Script Analysis

The study of dramatic structure and methods of analysis as a preparation for producing, performing, directing, designing, writing, and critiquing scripts.  Students will study and dissect the plot, characters, language style, elements of the genre, and overall themes.

Introduction to Theatrical Design

An introductory class to the world of stage and theatrical design.  Elements of study include scenery, costuming, lighting, projections, and properties.  Students will gain a basic understanding of the design process behind on stage performing.

Stagecraft

This is a basic course in gaining knowledge of the tools and equipment used in theatre, construction of stage scenery and properties, and overall backstage procedures.

Scenic Design

This course focuses on the principles and practices of designing scenery through the development of skills in script analysis, research, previsualization, sketching, model building, drafting, and rendering.

Stagecraft Lab

Students will provide backstage assistance with sets, properties, and stage crews for live productions.

Stage Lighting

A beginning course in stage lighting including the elements of electricity and circuitry, principles of lighting for productions, and hands-on training of mounting and setting lights.

Sound Design & Engineering

The study of basic concepts and skills for designing sound for stage productions.  Students will explore the aesthetic and practical use of sound effects, use of digital audio editing, and recording of sound for productions.

Stage Production & Management

A course designed to give students the background and skills necessary to function as an effective organizational manager throughout an on-stage production.  Topics include the production process, rehearsal and performance procedures, auditions, communication, and organization.

Costume Design

Designed for students to gain a basic understanding of costume design and the construction process, operation of a costume shop, and the use of costumes as they relate to the performer’s development of a character and the overall production.

Lighting Design

Students will learn how to design lights for productions. Studies will include the elements of color theory, play analysis, hand drafting, and digital programming.

Costume Construction

The theory and practice of the construction, finishing, and handling of costumes for productions and the entertainment industry.

Costume Lab

Students learn the rudiments of costume repair and maintenance, the etiquette of costumes backstage, and the technical problems and procedures surrounding the costuming of a show.

Makeup Lab

Students gain skills in the use of proper tools and procedures for applying stage makeup for both small and large stage productions.

Advanced Stage Management

Advanced study in the methods and execution of stage management.  Students will go through the complete process of production, stage management responsibilities, and relationships with production and administrative staff.  Many projects and presentations.
